The Summer Academy for Cultural and Creative Industries and Local Development (SACCI) started in 2018 to provide policymakers and practitioners with the tools to design innovative policies that respond to the needs of these industries. Each year, SACCI tackles a different theme, and invites policymakers and practitioners from around the world to share their experiences and learn from international experts in the field.

In 2023, as for the previous five editions, Lia Ghilardi was asked to curate the programme, as well as facilitate and moderate sessions of the Academy. The sixth edition (18-20/9) focused on how advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), 3D printing and blockchain, alongside digital platform intermediaries, are shaping the cultural and creative sector. During SACCI international high-profile experts explored the challenges and opportunities presented by these advances and helped participants to deepen the debate on the ethics of such developments.

In addition, the 2023 Academy included an optional onsite three-day study visit in Trentino, Italy. This allowed participants to consider real-life situations through, among other things, a hackathon aimed at engaging participants with the issues faced by a cultural heritage organisation in the city of Trento.
